Highly collectable mangle board - latest star box

                                                              The Mangle Board

    This latest Michael Grogan Star Box™ has an antique mangle board on the lid. Mangle boards were used as a courtship or wedding proposal and also a laundry tool with which to smooth out laundry. These art forms were made from sturdy wood such as oak, birch or beech. Mangle Boards have been dated as far back as the 16th century. When used with a large rolling dowel it resulted in smoothed out linens or as a linen press. They worked quite well and were said to last a lifetime and beyond. Primarily in Northern Europe the mangle board often included a horse figure as the handle. Horse figure handles were popular in Norway and Sweden. The more beautiful the board the more likely the woman was to accept and that is why the horse figure was so popular in this region.  This art form is highly collectible.
     The proposing groom would carve a mangle board and leave it on his sweethearts doorstep or porch- If she took it into her home- that was a yes- If it remained - that was a no. Many times what he thought she loved or what symbolized his love for her was used in the design. This particular mangle board is most likely Norwegian as it is the figure of a horse. So horse lovers- this is beyond interesting to me! Who knew all we needed was a horse handled mangle board - and oh the horse too;
     *thank you to Michael Grogan for sharing this ™star box.     note: this mangle board carving was salvaged from an antique mangle board that was not intact  - it was sold the day it was completed and after a trip to horse country it is at home with its horse lover.

The Number Nine

Michael Grogan Star Boxes™ have always been a favorite for many art lovers and this one is no different in its touch to the heart. We love stalking his art. This one seemed to be extra special.
  There is not a Christmas that goes by that I do not remember that Christmas morning when there was an electric train clacking around at the base of the Christmas tree- It was the Engine No. 9
  My Grandfather was an engineer for the railroad and he shared his love of all things train.  This Star Box™ -The Number Nine- is made from an old Firehouse Block - used to keep a Firetruck from rolling backwards. With thoughts of trains and firetrucks comes thoughts of the horses we rode as we attmepted to chase them. At that time in my life, it was the quarter horse I rode that made the best ride, literally! Hobos propped in the open door of an empty rail car laughing at us as we ran full speed bareback chasing a train in a downtown area of a city in Mississippi.
  Star Boxes™ like most art evoke memories and emotion for many people. But we think a poem -  by Robert Louis Stevenson says it best

From a Railway Carriage

Faster than fairies, faster than witches,
Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches;
And charging along like troops in a battle,
All through the meadows the horses and cattle :
All the sights of the hill and the plain
Fly as thick as driving rain;
And ever again, in the wink of an eye,
Painted stations whistle by.

Here is a child who clambers and scrambles,
All by himself and gathering brambles;
Here is a tramp who stands and gazes;
And there is the green for stringing the daisies!
Here is a cart run away in the road
Lumping along with man and load;
And here is a mill, and there is a river:
Each a glimpse and gone for ever.

Robert Louis Stevenson

Latest Michael Grogan Star Box

 Michael Grogans latest addition to his Star Boxes™ makes my heart sing!  His art is collected by equestrians and stable owners alike along with famous writers, artists and D.C. dignitaries. We love how he includes horses in so many of his boxes but we also love his whimsical flair with animals and birds. This one I particularly love as it shows children playing together and reminds of the E. E. Cummings childrens poem- maggie and millie and molly and may

  maggie and milly and molly and may
went down to the beach(to play one day)

and maggie discovered a shell that sang
so sweetly she couldn't remember her troubles,and

milly befriended a stranded star
whose rays five languid fingers were;

and molly was chased by a horrible thing
which raced sideways while blowing bubbles:and

may came home with a smooth round stone
as small as a world and as large as alone.

For whatever we lose(like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea
Thank you for sharing this photo with me Michael and -  Though he is very private - try to friend Michael on Facebook through this link below and check out his work  https://www.facebook.com/michael.grogan.79?fref=ts
